NOUAKCHOTT, 23 June (IRIN) - Mauritania's new military leaders are encouraging voters to massively take part in a referendum on Sunday aimed at promoting democracy and preventing presidents from remaining in office for more than two terms.

Out of 173 registered reported cases of cholera in Kissidougou, east of Guinea, 16 people have so far died while a regional crisis management committee continues to meet in Kissidougou seeking solutions to abrogate it's spread.

NIAMEY, 22 June (IRIN) - Quiet fell over the Niger capital of Niamey on Thursday as labour unions called a national strike over the high cost of living. Only the banks and large private companies opened as most of the capital's residents stayed home.
